- No third-party analytics SDKs inside the app
- No subscription or payment flow in version 1.0
- No automatic upload of session data to Ultrabirdy servers
- iPhone-only recording mode (GPS from iPhone) when you paddle without a Watch

Data the app can access or create
Depending on device capabilities and permissions you grant, UltraKayak may access or create the following data during a user-started paddle session:
- Session timing and metadata
- Apple Watch motion and fitness data
- Precise location data for the active paddle route
- Heart-rate and workout-related HealthKit samples when authorized
- Local session packages transferred from Apple Watch to iPhone
- Analysis outputs used for training review
- Voice notes recorded with the microphone, only when you tap to record one
- Photos you attach to a session from your library
How data is used
- Record a training session on Apple Watch
- Save motion, location, heart-rate, and workout data for the session
- Transfer the session package to iPhone
- Display local session information and training analysis
- Help paddlers review kayak stroke and session data
Data sharing and retention
Your training data is stored on your Apple Watch and iPhone. If you enable optional iCloud backup, backup copies are also stored in your own iCloud account, as described below. UltraKayak does not send these backups to our servers.
Data may also leave your device through the map and tide requests described under "Maps and tide data", or when you choose to share, export or send information using system sharing features or direct feedback. You are responsible for the people or services you choose to share exported data with.
Maps and tide data
Route maps are drawn with Apple Maps (MapKit). Map tiles are requested from Apple for the area shown; Apple's privacy policy applies to those requests.
If you choose a reviewed launch point with tide support, UltraKayak asks a third-party tide service (QWeather) for tide events using only the station number of that launch point and the date range of the session. Your GPS route, coordinates, and personal data are never sent to the tide service. Automatic tide lookup stays off until you pick such a launch point.
Optional iCloud backup
iCloud backup is optional and turned off by default. You can turn it on in UltraKayak's Settings using the iCloud account signed in on your iPhone. You do not need to create an UltraKayak account. Recording and reviewing training sessions do not require iCloud backup.
When you turn it on, UltraKayak backs up your existing and new training sessions, including training packages (including recorded routes and motion data, with health samples and heart-rate statistics excluded), session details and notes, attached photos, voice notes and saved tide screenshots, and your boat, paddle and launch-point library with training settings. Backup metadata includes the app version, device name and backup time. Backups use your own iCloud storage allowance. Transfers use Wi-Fi by default; you can allow cellular data in Settings. Recordings still in progress, originals stored on Apple Watch and built-in demo sessions are not backed up by this feature. Heart rate is never backed up to iCloud; it is read again from the Health app after a restore. Reading heart rate requires your permission and matching data available in Health; if none is available, the restored session remains available without heart rate.
Your backups move between your devices and your own iCloud account, using Apple's CloudKit private database. We, the developers of UltraKayak, do not receive, store on our servers or have access to these backups. This feature does not share your training with coaches or other users. Apple provides the iCloud service, which is subject to [Apple's iCloud terms](https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/icloud/).
UltraKayak restores training sessions from iCloud only when you choose to start or resume a restore. Checking whether a backup is available does not itself restore sessions. You can stop a restore and keep the sessions already restored on this iPhone.
When you turn off iCloud backup, you can keep your existing iCloud copies or choose to delete them. Turning it off while keeping copies stops future backups and leaves those copies in iCloud. Choosing to delete the copies when turning it off, or using Clear iCloud Copies in Settings, removes UltraKayak's backups from your iCloud after the deletion succeeds; it does not delete your local training data. Deletion requires access to iCloud. If it fails, the app shows an error and you can retry. If backup remains enabled after clearing copies, later changes or a manual backup can upload data again.
HealthKit
UltraKayak requests HealthKit access only for kayak training and workout recording purposes. You can control Health permissions in the Health app or iOS Settings. HealthKit data is not used for advertising or marketing. Heart rate and other Health samples are never included in iCloud backups; after a restore they are read again from the Health app with your permission.
Website analytics
Ultrabirdy uses Google Analytics 4 on this website to understand page visits and product interest. This website analytics setup is separate from the UltraKayak app and does not use HealthKit, motion, location, or session data from the app.
